Position Summary: FKB is looking to hire a full-time, permanent Sr. Designer to act as second in command to the Director of Design within the design team of the firm. The Sr Designer works primarily to create design concepts per client desires and needs while leading a team of designers to achieve these goals. This role will focus on generating renderings and coordinating projects from design concept through construction, where applicable.

The goal of this position is to manage projects and collaborate with team members creatively, efficiently, and with astute attention to detail. Candidates must be authorized to work lawfully in the United States. This opportunity is based in Philadelphia, and some travel (mostly local) may be required.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Acting as the second in command to the Director of Design; assisting with setting the creative direction of the firm while also delegating to and managing other members of the design team

  • Planning out the design teams goals with the Director of Design and other members of Leadership

  • Assigning tasks to junior members of the design team, and overseeing the work of this staff to ensure proper follow through and execution of tasks

  • Responsible for coordinating with the CEO on all business development matters concerning change orders, scope of work, contract development etc.

  • Concept and design development/strategy per client wants and needs, but also within the constraints of realistic fabrication and installation

  • Working directly with clients to achieve their project goals and deliverables, meet their expectations, but also managing to realistic design possibilities and budgets

  • Drafting construction design documents and schematic design documents for various clients and projects; parallel processing multiple jobs at one time

  • Coordinating with Design Engineering to generate fabrication shop drawings

  • Client consultation and coordination, including conducting and facilitating design meetings

  • Liaising with FKB project managers, fabricators, subcontractors and clients to keep process moving seamlessly

  • Generate renderings through Revit, AutoCad, Rhino, and other Auto Desk applications in order to generate construction and other documents

  • Ability to utilize Adobe Suite, in order to manipulate graphical documents

  • Material mockups and sample gathering for client presentation and review; Establish relationships with product representatives in order to receive finished samples. This includes coordinating with clients for finishes and other design details.

  • Site survey for documentation of existing conditions for projects

  • Coordinate with other engineering and design professionals

  • Responsible for line work documentation that is being sent to clients, for example: 2D images, floor plans, ceiling plans, etc.

  • Responsible for CAD redlining and marking up changes to a design document per the Director of Design and/or other team members in order to help the team and client understand changes

  • Other additional duties and functions include:

  • Drafting schematics for other mediums as needed, for example 3D printing, laser cutter, etc.

  • Create presentation packets and plans for client and community review

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s of Science in Architecture or Bachelor’s of Architecture; or a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design; or a Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Design required

  • Master’s Degree preferred but not required

  • Or, background in Architecture, Industrial Design, Design Fabrication (preferably with experience in metal and carpentry)

  • Minimum 5 years professional experience as an architectural or interior designer

  • Minimum of 2 years managing small teams

  • Ability to delegate to team members while also holding responsibility for those tasks

  • Project Management experience strongly preferred

  • Able to produce quality construction and permit drawings, architectural drawings

  • Proficient in Auto Desk applications including Revit, Rhinoceros 3D and AutoCad, preferably 3-5 years

  • Experience parametric software such as Grasshopper is preferred but not required

  • Experience in Digital Fabrication is required

  • Strong understanding of current applicable building codes

  • Experience conducting site surveys and anticipating any foreseeable obstacles

  • Experience with selecting materials and design finishes

  • Exudes leadership qualities and skills, including the ability to act as a team player, act appropriately and remain organized when under pressure and tight deadlines

  • Able to communicate clearly and professionally to internal teams, clients, and vendors

  • Able to concisely document communication with clients and manage their expectations

  • Able to clearly communicate and effectively collaborate with other consultants and external engineers

  • Ability to pivot into different projects that are in different stages/phases

  • Fine and close attention to detail

  • Meticulous organizational skills

  • Flexible time management

  • Ability to multi-task and stay organized in a fast-paced environment
